If convergence was the theme of keynote speaker Richard Rosen’s presentation, it would also be an apt word to describe the Electronic Home Shopping Conference this year – an unparalleled convergence of companies, cultures and delegates.

Despite the heavy financial pressure many industries are currently facing, and the necessary paring-back of marketing budgets, the ERA European Conference looks to have remained firmly in the ‘must-attend’ bracket. Perhaps marginally quieter than some previous conferences, it was nevertheless extremely well attended with both old and new business leaders. With a quick glance of the show floor, Business Club area and of course the hotel bar, it was abundantly obvious that delegates were fully engaged, new deals were being forged and ideas were being traded.

The Fairmont Hotel Monte Carlo was the plush setting for the conference and delegates got together officially on Sunday evening, June 28 for a welcoming cocktail reception. Halfway through the evening, one could see the ripples of shock spreading through the conference hall as news of the tragic passing of industry legend Billy Mays began to circulate. Coming the same week as the death of the also-50 year-old Michael Jackson, one guest was heard to remark “we have lost our industry’s Michael Jackson”, reflecting on the impact he had made during his career. Billy will be sorely missed throughout the world – the King of DRTV will always be remembered - and the affection towards him and his family being spread from Monte Carlo was deep and warm.

On Monday, June 29, delegates were treated to two different sessions from Richard Rosen who, drawing heavily from his recently published book, Convergence Marketing, delivered a lively and inspiring Opening Education Session and then followed up by addressing the Leadership Luncheon. Rosen’s talk focused on his template for bringing together the best elements of brand advertising and the best elements of direct response. He demonstrated also his proprietary concept, the Rosen Velocity Scale, a tool for determining and measuring the most appropriate creative execution for your product or service.

Monday evening saw the fantastic ERA Europe Ministry of Fun James Bond Networking Cruise and Dinner, sponsored by Canis Media and Litle & Co. The unpredictable weather conditions did little to dampen the spirits of the guests as the boat cruised along the French coast at great speed before mooring in a picturesque bay, allowing guests to bask warm evening light with the a backdrop of the flickering lights of a stunning French coastal village nestled in the foot of the hills behind them. All in all, it was a stunning location for first-class networking and socializing.

The Multimedia Consumer and You seminar took place on the last day, Tuesday, June 30, and featured Vpod.tv’s Rodrigo Sepulveda Schulz, Simply Media’s Henry Scott, and CentrSource’s Bob Westrope. All three talks contained fascinating insights into new ways in which companies and advertisers are engaging with consumers, through micro-blogging, advertiser-generated content, multimedia applications, the latest developments in social networking sites and applications such as Twitter and Facebook.
